Poker Glossary

This glossary of poker terms covers the main expressions and definitions for the poker game.
Ante This is usually a forced bed that is placed in the pot at the start of some poker games before seeing one’s cards.
Bad beat This relates to an unlikely hand beating a much more favored hand due to the lucky draw of a card.
Bind This is a bet that is made by one or more of the players before the dealing of cards.
Buy-in This relates to a fee that needs to be paid by a player in order to participate in a particular game.
Call To match the previous bet by placing in the pot the same amount as was just placed by the player before.
Cap This refers to the final raise that is allowed in a round of betting.
Community cards These cards are shared cards that are dealt face up and may be used by any of the players. Community cards are used in poker games such as Hold’em and Omaha.
Down cards These are cards that are not shown and are dealt face down.
Face cards These are also known as royals and consist of kings, queens and jacks.
Flush This refers to a hand of five cards of the same suit.
Fold This refers to when a player that does not wish to continue in this round of the game surrenders the hand.
Foul hand Such a hand contains an incorrect number of cards
Heads up In such a contest, 2 players compete against each other.
Hi/Lo This relates to a type of poker game in which both a high hand and a low hand are involved.
Hole cards These are cards that are dealt and not shown and are usually the first cards.
H.O.R.S.E. Mixed poker game that includes Holdem Omaha Razz, seven cards stud and eight stud.
Odds These refer to probabilities
Pocket cards These are also known as hole cards.
Pot limit This is a type of poker game that enables players to place bet s according to the sum of money in the pot.
Rake This refers to the amount from each pot that is taken in by the casino.
River This refers to the last community card that is dealt.
Show down This follows all the betting and the dealing of cards and occurs when the players’ hands are revealed.
SNG Also known as a sit n go, this poker tournament has no scheduled starting time and begins when the seats at the table are full.
Turn This refers to the fourth community card.
Wheel This refers to a hand of Ace- 2-3-4-5 and is also referred to a bicycle.
